avocado-rincon-dwarf
Dwarf Avocado - Rincon - NZ Exclusive

Rincon is a dwarf, high-yielding avocado variety known for its suitability for small gardens and container growing. It is popular in Australia, often used as a backyard substitute for larger, more vigorous trees. Out of all the varieties available in New Zealand, Rincon is the smallest growing, making it ideal for those wanting to grow an avocado tree in limited space or in a large pot. The growth habit is a spreading canopy, typically reaching around 2.5–3 metres high, though it can grow wider if left unpruned. The tree can easily be kept smaller with light annual pruning. It is a heavy and consistent bearer, with strong fruiting often helping to naturally control tree size. Rincon is also notable as one of the parent varieties of the Pinkerton avocado, contributing to its compact growth habit. It is often described as having better eating quality and being an even smaller growing tree than the popular ‘Wurtz’ (Little Cado) dwarf variety found overseas.

Rincon was bred in Carlsbad, California, by Sam Thompson and introduced in 1948. It is well suited to temperate climates, including many parts of New Zealand. It is known for its reliable production, good cold tolerance, and ability to perform well in slightly cooler conditions than some other varieties. The tree can tolerate light frost once established.

Rincon produces medium-sized, pear-shaped fruit, often with a slightly longer neck. The skin is smooth, green, and remains green when ripe, and peels easily. The flesh is smooth, creamy, and mostly fibreless, with a pleasant flavour and good oil content.

Flower Type: A

Colour when ripe: Green

Fruit shape: Necky Pear (pyriform)

Fruit size: Medium

Seed: Medium-large

Fruit quality/taste: Rich and buttery.

Harvest season: Late winter-summer - can vary by region

Type: Hybrid

Origin: California

Tree Habit: Dwarf, low spreading.

Rincon is an A flowering type, and although avocado trees in our climate are self-fertile, they do produce more fruit if 2 are planted near each other with opposing flower types. Frazer is a great companion for Rincon if you’re wanting to pair your Rincon with a smaller growing B type.
