Mac's Golden is a very good variety of Casimiroa, with a deep yellow flesh and rich flavour. The fruit are large, and slightly more oval in shape compared to the traditional round/squat shape of other varieties. The flesh is like custard, and it is eaten by slicing it in half, and scooping it out with a spoon.
Casimiroa are surprisingly easy to grow for a tropical tasting fruit. It is evergreen and can handle light frosts once established. They are self fertile and generally require only little maintenance.
These are grafted trees and will usually produce flowers and fruit this year, and some of our current stock already has flowers forming now. Although these will start to form fruit, it is best to remove them for the first season to let the tree focus on growth, rather than fruit production.
Casimiora care tips
- Subtropical to tropical, tolerating brief temperatures down to -5.5°C. However, young trees require frost protection.
- Prefers moderate humidity, but adapts well to high humidity.
- Requires sunny locations in cooler areas, with potential for some shade in warmer climates.
- Needs regular watering, though it can withstand short dry periods.
- Deep soil is essential due to its large taproot; container growing is limited to trees with root pruning or cuttings.
