The Ficus dammaropsis, or Dinner Plate Fig, is a spectacular tree native to Papua New Guinea. Its standout feature is its enormous, pleated leaves, reaching up to 90cm long. These impressive leaves are the inspiration for its common name.

This tree produces the world's largest figs, though they're typically only eaten in times of scarcity. The fruit is pollinated by the tiny fig wasp, Ceratosolon abnormis. In the local cuisine of Papua New Guinea, the young leaves are often pickled or cooked and enjoyed as a vegetable.

Due to its substantial size, Ficus dammaropsis requires a large space to thrive, making it more suitable for expansive gardens or parks. It flourishes best in a frost-free climate, and is especially well-suited for areas in the Northland and Auckland regions. It thrives in well-draining soil and full sun. With its bold presence, the Dinner Plate Fig can serve as a focal point in tropical landscapes, offering a unique aesthetic appeal with its extraordinary foliage and fruit.
