The Moringa tree (Moringa oleifera), also known as the Horseradish Tree due to its pungent root flavor, is a fast-growing, nutrient-rich tree native to the Indian subcontinent. It's now cultivated globally in tropical and subtropical areas, prized for its versatile uses. Nearly all parts of the Moringa tree – leaves, pods, seeds, and roots – are edible and offer a wealth of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, contributing to its reputation as a "superfood." Beyond its nutritional value, Moringa has applications in traditional medicine, water purification, and even industrial uses like oil extraction. Its rapid growth and drought resistance make it particularly valuable in arid climates.
In New Zealand, Moringa trees flourish in sunny, sheltered locations with free-draining soil. Water generously during the growing season, being careful not to overwater, which can lead to root rot. The plant will become fully dormant in winter, so reduce watering significantly and move it to a warm, sheltered spot. For best results, grow Moringa in a greenhouse or a pot that can be easily moved indoors during winter. This will protect it from cold and help it survive its dormant period.
