Ananas lucidus, also known as the red spiny pineapple, is a species of bromeliad native to subtropical and tropical South America. It is a close relative of the common pineapple (Ananas comosus), but it has several distinct characteristics. The leaves are long, narrow, and arching. They are typically coppery-red in color, especially when grown in bright light. Unlike the common pineapple, the leaves of Ananas lucidus have no spines. The flowers are borne on a spike and are surrounded by pink bracts. They are small and white with purple markings. The fruit is small, red, and inedible. It resembles a miniature pineapple, but it is much less fleshy and has a fibrous texture. Ananas lucidus is a clumping herbaceous perennial. It can grow to be 2-3 feet tall and wide. This plant prefers warm, humid conditions with bright, indirect light.
