The Red Sichuan Pepper( Z. bungeanum or Z. simulans) is a hardy, deciduous shrub that adapts well to a variety of climates, handling both winter frosts and sunny summer stretches with ease. As a member of the citrus family, it features aromatic, lemony foliage and thrives best in well-drained soil. It works equally well as a standalone specimen or a prickly, functional hedge. While the sharp thorns require some caution during pruning, it is a largely self-sufficient plant that, once established, manages dry spells and cold snaps with very little intervention.
In late summer, the plant produces clusters of red berries; once these split open, you harvest the husks to capture the fresh, numbing tingle and floral fragrance essential for authentic Sichuan cooking. It is an easy-going addition to an edible forest or a large patio pot, offering a unique, gourmet harvest that is difficult to find fresh in most markets.
Current stock: Cutting grown from a mature, fruiting plant; approximately 90 - 100 cm high.
