Surinam cherry, also known as Brazilian cherry or Pitanga, is a small tree or shrub that belongs to the Myrtaceae family. It is native to South America but is also widely grown in tropical and subtropical regions around the world.
The mother tree of this plant is fully grown, and is around 2x2 meters. It has a dense, bushy habit with a spreading canopy of glossy, dark-green leaves that are oval shaped. The leaves are evergreen and give off a pleasant aroma when crushed.
The Surinam cherry plant produces small, round, orange fruit. It has a thin, edible skin and contains usually 1 seed in the middle, similar to traditional cherries. The flesh of the fruit is juicy with a sweet tangerine-like flavour. The fruit is high in Vitamin C and has numerous health benefits.
The plant prefers well-drained soil and thrives in full sun to partial shade. It is relatively drought-tolerant and can withstand moderate frosts. They are easy to care for and requires little maintenance, making it a popular choice for home gardens and landscaping projects.
