Dragonfruit Yellow (Palora) - Rooted in a pot

Selenicereus megalanthus, commonly known as Palora dragon fruit, is grown commercially in Palora, Ecuador, from which it gets its name. This variety resembles its close relative, the Yellow Dragon fruit (Columbiana), but is more robust in growth, with less sensitivity to environmental conditions and a more vigorous habit. The olive-colored stems can reach up to 120 cm in length and have medium-sized spines. Its large, self-pollinating flowers can take up to 40 days to bloom from bud to full flower, with fruit then taking around six months to form and ripen.

In New Zealand, Palora fruits are ready in spring, when other dragon fruit types and colors are out of season, allowing for a longer harvest period. The fruit itself is vibrant yellow and covered with spines that brush off easily when it’s ready to harvest. Weighing between 450 and 680 grams, it is significantly larger than other yellow dragon fruit varieties. The flesh is white with crunchy seeds and is exceptionally sweet, achieving a Brix rating of 22-24, with a juicy, tropical flavor that resembles Juicy Fruit candy.

Currect stock : Cutting from mature fruiting plants; under the right conditions, it will produce fruit after 1–2 years.
