African Pride stands out as one of the premier varieties within the Annona family, offering a richer and more tropical flavor compared to the cherimoya. The fruits are typically larger than sugar apples, featuring knobby, green skin and a custard-like flesh that exhibits a slightly more substantial texture than a Cherimoya. Ripe fruits may develop a subtle yellow hue. While African Pride often sets fruit without the need for hand pollination, manual pollination can enhance overall fruit production.
In contrast, the atemoya, characterised by its heart-shaped or rounded form, boasts pale-green, bumpy skin. The skin near the stem resembles the sugar apple but becomes smoother akin to the cherimoya towards the bottom. The non-segmented flesh, reminiscent of the cherimoya, is exceptionally juicy and smooth with a mildly sweet taste, evoking hints of a pina colada. The flavor also carries notes of vanilla from its sugar apple parent.
Originating from the hybridisation of the Sugar Apple and Cherimoya, both native to the American tropics, the Atemoya has gained popularity in regions like Taiwan, where it is often referred to as the "Pineapple Sugar Apple." Despite its name, the Atemoya is not a cross between the sugar apple and pineapple.
Our Atemoya trees are grafted onto Cherimoya rootstock for better cold-hardiness.
