Starfruit (Averrhoa carambola) are evergreen trees that have drooping branches with glossy, medium-green leaves arranged in a spiral pattern. The star-shaped fruits are characterised by 5-6 ridges, and range from 5-7 inches long. These fruits change from green to yellow when ripe and boast a juicy, fruity, slightly tart flavor. The fruit are usually eaten fresh, or used in juices, salads, and desserts, while the leaves are used in traditional medicine.
Starfruit trees thrive in warm, humid climates. They require well-draining soil, and prefer a soil that is rich in organic matter. While they prefer full sun when mature, they benefit from part shade while young. Starfruit trees can be successfully grown in warmer regions such as Northland, Auckland and the Bay of Plenty. Other parts of the country would require growing it in a greenhouse. Frost protection is necessary during winter months. If potted, starfruit trees can be brought indoors during colder periods.
