Yellow Mangosteen (Rare)

Garcinia xanthochymus

The Yellow Mangosteen, distinct from the tropical mangosteen, is a petite tree, typically reaching heights of 3-6 meters. During certain seasons, it produces white flowers that emit a delightful gardenia-like fragrance, as it is related to the common gardenia.

This fruit is round and contains tart, yellow segments with high acidity, a sweet and sour flavor, a perfect texture, and is very refreshing. 

Unlike the purple mangosteen, it is easier to cultivate in subtropical regions, but its flavor differs significantly. The tree thrives in both full sun and shade and remains prolific in terms of fruit production even in drought conditions. It boasts an appealing appearance with its large, drooping leaves and layered structure. When the fruit is on the tree, which can grow up to 8-10 cm in length, it has an ornamental quality.

People enjoy consuming fresh fruit, and the tree is also commonly cultivated for its beautiful white flowers, known for their strong, fragrant gardenia scent.

These trees thrive in moist, warm environments, and they may even withstand brief periods of frost.

In some parts of Northland, these are growing outdoors just fine. For those south of Auckland, it's recommended to grow them in a greenhouse.
