Yellow Sapote, Canistel plant

The Yellow Sapote, also known as Canistel or 'egg fruit' due to its round to oval shape and yellow-orange color when ripe, boasts a sweet earthy flavor and a more moist texture compared with Lucuma. Enjoyed fresh with a hint of salt and lemon juice, it can also be incorporated into sweet custards or whipped into creamy milkshakes akin to eggnog by blending with milk. Its richness allows for the flesh to be dried and powdered, offering a flavorful addition to various sweet desserts.

Canistel trees thrive in tropical and warm subtropical climates with periodic rainfall. They are sensitive to frost and cold temperatures, tolerating only down to around 0°C for a short period. Prolonged exposure to cold can damage or kill the tree. If you live in an area with freezing temperatures, it's best to grow canistels in containers that can be brought indoors during the winter or in a greenhouse/sunroom.
