Allspice thrives as a container plant or indoor or greenhouse cultivation. Its delicate flowers are clustered in large groups, followed by the development of small fruits that mature into a purple-black color.
The dried seeds of allspice serve as a popular flavoring in a wide range of dishes. Additionally, oil extracted from the seeds, leaves, and bark is used to add fragrance to cosmetics, foods, and various other products. The primary oil obtained from allspice is eugenol, which is the same aromatic oil found in cloves.
Allspice is grown for its ornamental use and leaves. Though flowers are physically bisexual, trees are functionally single-sex (dioecious), usually requiring both male and female plants for fruit. However, female trees can sometimes produce male flowers and set fruit.
