The Double Cavendish, also known as Double Mahoi, is a unique dwarf Cavendish banana variety. What sets it apart is its ability to produce two bunches of exceptionally sweet fruit when cultivated under the right conditions. This compact plant can reach heights of up to 2 meters and thrives outdoors in the north of Auckland, making it an excellent choice for smaller backyards. For people further south, it is an excellent option for greenhouse cultivation due to its dwarfing nature. Alternatively, you can grow them in large pots as houseplants or in offices to bring a touch of nature to your workplace.

Originating from Hawaii, the Double Mahoi is sensitive to frost and prefers shelter and full sun for optimal growth. It is especially well-suited for greenhouse cultivation, where it can produce smaller yet exceptionally tasty fruit in large clusters.

As banana plants are heavy feeders, they benefit from ample organic matter. Placing a bottomless compost bin near your plants is a convenient way to provide them with regular and natural nutrition with minimal effort. This will help ensure healthy growth and bountiful fruit production.

Banana Plant Care Tips
  1. Sunlight: Banana plants thrive in full sun, so it's best to plant them in an area that receives at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day.

  2. Soil: Banana plants prefer well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter. A pH range of 5.5-7.0 is ideal for optimal growth.

  3. Watering: Banana plants require regular watering, especially during the growing season. Keep the soil moist, but not waterlogged. Overwatering can cause the roots to rot.

  4. Fertilizer: Banana plants are heavy feeders and require regular fertilization. Apply a balanced fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season.

  5. Mulching: Mulch around the base of the plant to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.

  6. Pruning: Remove any dead or damaged leaves and suckers (smaller offshoots that grow from the base of the plant) regularly. This will help promote healthy growth and prevent disease.

  7. Pests and diseases: Banana plants are susceptible to a variety of pests and diseases, so it's important to monitor the plant regularly for any signs of infestation or disease. Common pests include aphids, spider mites, and mealybugs, while common diseases include Panama disease and Sigatoka leaf spot.

  8. Harvesting: Bananas are typically harvested when they are fully ripe and the skin is yellow. Cut the bunch off the plant with a sharp knife and allow the fruit to ripen further at room temperature.

Well packaged, small and compact little plant!

So excited to receive my dwarf banana plant. I love that flying dragon stocked the plants, and delivery was quick. The plants were small but healthy, well packaged, easy to carry around and transplant into the spot all ready for it.
