Chocolate Pudding Fruit (Black Sapote)

The Black Sapote (Diospyros digyna), also known as Chocolate Pudding Fruit or chocolate sapote, is a large, green-skinned fruit, roughly the size and shape of a Fuyu Persimmon. When ripe, its flesh turns dark brown or black, resembling the texture and taste of chocolate pudding, making it perfect for desserts. The fruit is delicious when consumed fresh or used in desserts such as mousse, cakes, and custards.

These trees can remain small and bear fruit even at just a few feet tall. Mature trees can tolerate temperatures as low as -2°C but need frost protection while young. In warmer regions of New Zealand, they can be grown outdoors in sheltered, frost-free areas, while in cooler climates, a greenhouse or conservatory may be necessary. They thrive in various soil types. 

Black Sapote trees from seedlings can produce bisexual, male, or female flowers. Although some trees can self-pollinate, having two trees enhances fruiting chances through cross-pollination.
