The Black Sapote (Diospyros nigra / Diospyros digyna), also known as Chocolate Pudding Fruit or chocolate sapote, is a large, green-skinned fruit, roughly the size and shape of a Fuyu Persimmon. When ripe, its flesh turns dark brown or black, resembling the texture and taste of chocolate pudding, making it perfect for desserts. The fruit is delicious when consumed fresh or used in desserts such as mousse, cakes, and custards.

These trees can remain small and bear fruit even at just a few feet tall. Mature trees can tolerate temperatures as low as -2°C but need frost protection while young. In warmer regions of New Zealand, they can be grown outdoors in sheltered, frost-free areas, while in cooler climates, a greenhouse or conservatory may be necessary. They thrive in various soil types.

Black Sapote trees from seedlings can produce bisexual, male, or female flowers. Although some trees can self-pollinate, having two trees enhances fruiting chances through cross-pollination.

Current stock: 2-year-old Bernicker Seedlings.

Diospyros digyna (aka Black Sapote; aka Chocolate Pudding Fruit; a member of the Persimmon Family)

Diospyros digyna: A pair of absolutely gorgeous, vigorous, healthy and rich, green leafy Diospyros digyna plants (each about 1.2M high) delivered in excellent condition by overnight courier from Flying Dragon Nursery in the Northland to Whanganui. Diospyros digyna is a variety of Persimmon that bears fruits with a dark, thick, pudding-like flesh, even though they are commonly called Sapotes. They do need some frost protection in the first couple of years and then should be able to withstand temperatures down to about freezing. Best to get two plants for optimal cross-pollination. Fruits are ready to eat when dark olive-green and super soft to the touch; can be picked when fully mature and then left to ripen until slightly shrivelled.
