Carob plant

The carob plant, also known as Ceratonia siliqua, is a species of evergreen tree or shrub that is native to the Mediterranean region. It belongs to the family Fabaceae and is known for its edible fruit, which is sometimes used as a chocolate substitute.

The fruit of the carob tree is a long, brown pod that contains a sweet, edible pulp and seeds. The pulp can be used to make a variety of products, including carob powder, syrup, and molasses.

Carob is often used as a substitute for chocolate because it has a similar flavor and texture, but is lower in fat and calories. It is also a good source of fiber and contains no caffeine or theobromine, which are both present in chocolate.

In addition to its use as a food, the carob tree has also been used for medicinal purposes. The bark and leaves of the tree contain compounds that have been shown to have anti-inflammatory and anti-diabetic properties. The seeds of the carob tree are also used in the production of locust bean gum, which is a common food additive.

Carob trees grow best between 20°C to 30°C. They can tolerate temperatures from -5°C to 40°C. The tree needs a mild winter period below 10°C to produce fruit.
