Here is something different for the collectors! We have a limited number of double grafted finger lime trees, which have both our famous brown (pink flesh) and green finger limes grafted onto the same trifoliata rootstock. These are fantastic for people who want something very rare and unusual, or for those who want both colours of fruit but dont have the space for 2 trees.
Brown- Produces large, brown skinned fruit that have a pinky coloured flesh, and little to no seeds. If left to ripen fully, or left to oxidise a little after opening the fruit, the flesh tends to get a deeper colour, turning from pink to red. Brown finger limes have a taste closer to a lime/pink grapefruit flavour. These are perfect for adding to food dishes, especially as a garnish, and have endless uses.
Green - Our standard green finger lime, which has a green skin and pale yellow/lime/clear coloured flesh. Green finger limes have a stronger lime flavour, and higher acidity than the brown fruit. Green finger limes are perfect for drinks, or on food in place of a lemon or lime.
Note about double grafted citrus - Double grafted citrus work very well, but do require a little more attention than other single grafted trees. When receiving your tree, both grafted sides will be a similar size. This needs to be maintained as the tree grows to keep both side growing relatively evenly, so one does not overtake the other. This is very simple, and is done by pruning whichever side is growing faster to let the other side catch up. If you forget and find one side has grown much more than the other, you can easily rectify it by making a larger pruning cut on the taller side to even them out.
Both of the colours fruit at the same time of year, so your tree will have a stunning ornamental appeal when fruiting, having 2 colours of finger lime actively growing on the same tree at the same time.
Finger limes grow well in containers, and love free draining soil, and a mulch layer. They grow well in both direct sun, and part sun positions, and can handle light frosts once established. While establishing, you will need to frost protect them with either a frost cloth, liquid frost cloth, or take the plant into a sheltered spot if it is in a container.
Trees that are pruned early will bush out, however if unpruned, they grow more upright. Finger limes send out long water sprouts which then become their branches, so you can easily shape the trees to how you would like them to look in the future.
Our double grafted trees are grafted onto Rosenburg Trifoliata, which is a semi dwarfing tree that produces more flowers and fruit, and fruit with a higher brix content than other trifoliatas available in New Zealand. The tree will grow to around 3-3.5 meters high, and 2 meters wide.
