The jackfruit tree is a remarkable species known for producing one of the largest fruits globally. These fruits feature golden-yellow flesh with a strong fragrance, yet their flavor is delightfully sweet, often compared to a banana bubblegum taste. Jackfruits are a treat when consumed fresh or sun-dried, similar to dates. Additionally, the seeds can be roasted for a satisfying snack, and the unripe green fruit serves as a versatile vegetable in various curries.
To successfully grow jackfruit in New Zealand, especially south of Auckland, careful planning and suitable growing conditions are essential. In the Northland region, some outdoor locations have successfully produced fruit, while others have achieved fruiting in indoor environments. If you're considering growing jackfruit south of Auckland, it is recommended to cultivate them in a greenhouse or in a very hot, sunny, and sheltered spot, protected from southerly winds and frost.
Current seedling types:
Golden Nugget:
The Golden Nugget is a compact, highly prolific variety prized for its deep orange-yellow, fiberless flesh. It has a soft, creamy texture and a complex, honey-sweet flavor. Its skin is distinctive, featuring very small, fine “pebbled” spikes that turn a noticeable yellowish-green when the fruit is fully ripe.
Thong Prasert:
Thong Prasert is a premium Thai jackfruit variety prized for its unique round shape and firm, crunchy texture. Its golden-yellow flesh is intensely sweet and honey-like, making it a popular “crispy” variety for fresh eating and Thai desserts.
