The Medjool Date Palm, with its lush and stunning canopy, is a native sub-variety of Dactylifera from the Atlantic coast of Morocco. It performs exceptionally well in sub-tropical and tropical conditions. It is one of the most popular varieties of dates in the world, known for its large size, sweet flavor, and soft, chewy texture.

Once established, these palms can withstand New Zealand winters, but it is crucial to protect them from frost while they are young.

Medjool Date Palms thrive in full sun environments and are not overly picky about soil conditions. However, it's crucial to ensure proper soil drainage to prevent surface inundation, as they do not do well in constantly wet conditions near the surface. A high water table within 24 inches of the surface can be problematic.

Date palms are dioecious, having separate male and female plants. Males produce pollen but no fruit, while females bear delicious dates but need pollen from males for fertilization. They don't change sex, so planting 3 seedlings increases the chance of obtaining both genders for fruit production.
