Mountain soursop (Annona montana) is a small tree native to Central America, the Amazon, and islands in the Caribbean. It is a close relative of the common soursop (Annona muricata), but it is more cold-hardy.
Mountain soursop trees can grow up to 8 meters tall and produce fruit that is round to oval in shape and about the size of a softball. The skin is green with soft, fleshy spines, and the flesh is yellow and creamy. The fruit has a sweet and sour flavor, similar to soursop, but it is less acidic.
Mountain soursop fruit can be eaten fresh, juiced, or used in smoothies, ice cream, and other desserts. It is also a good source of vitamins C and A, as well as potassium and fibre.
In addition to its edible fruit, mountain soursop is also used as a rootstock for cultivated Annonas, such as soursop, cherimoya, and custard apple. This is because mountain soursop trees are more vigorous and disease-resistant than other Annonas.
It prefers full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil. Trees typically begin to bear fruit after 2-3 years. But these grafted trees already have some flower buds, so it won't take long for them to fruit. Although it's cold-tolerant, we recommend growing them in a larger pot in a warm sheltered spot for another year or two before planting them in the ground.
