Fuyu persimmon tree is an attractive  tree with striking autumn colorations of deep orange, burgundy and purple hues. It can be planted as a standalone tree or trained to grow along a wall or fence. The fruit it bears is non-astringent, sweet and crisp, and typically ripe in autumn- early winter. The fruit can be enjoyed fresh or used as a salad ingredient. It is not only beautiful but also nutritionally beneficial, containing high levels of Vitamin A and Vitamin C, as well as calcium, iron and phosphorus.

tips for caring for persimmon trees:

Planting: Persimmon trees prefer well-drained, fertile soil and full sun. They should be planted in the spring or fall and spaced at least 20 feet apart.

Watering: Persimmon trees need regular watering, especially during dry spells. They should be watered deeply, about once a week, to keep the soil moist.

Pruning: Persimmon trees should be pruned in the winter, when they are dormant. Remove any dead, diseased or crossing branches and shape the tree to encourage good fruit production and airflow.

Fertilizing: Persimmon trees benefit from regular fertilization. Apply a balanced fertilizer in the spring and again in the summer to support healthy growth.

Protecting from pests and diseases: Persimmon trees are relatively hardy, but can be affected by pests such as aphids and diseases like leaf spot. Regularly check the tree for signs of infestation and treat as needed.

Harvesting: Persimmon fruit is usually ready to harvest in late autumn to early winter. The fruit should be picked when it is fully ripe and has a deep orange color.

The many reasons to grow a Fuyu Persimmon

I personally love the Fuyu Persimmon variety of persimmon because:

1) They're a nice medium to large size fruit (the "american persimmon", in comparison, are MUCH smaller - usually slightly larger than a golf ball in size - and, while some argue that the american persimmon may be better in flavour - which is also up to personal taste and preference - the american persimmon can ONLY be eaten when it's fully ripened / gooey. So for those 2 negative reasons regarding the american persimmon, that's why I'd much rather have the Fuyu, because of its size and non-astringent quality.

2) The Fuyu Persimmon is a non-astringent type, meaning, it can be eaten when the skin is completely fanta-orange in colour (this is when it's crunchy and can be eaten like a crisp apple), and also when fully ripened, when it turns into a gooey consistency when pressed with a finger. There are persimmon varieties out there that are 'astringent' which gives you that puckering dry-mouth taste if you try to eat it when it's crunchy & not fully ripened. This is why I love the Fuyu Persimmon being non-astringent, because you don't have to worry about that. I personally prefer eating the fruit when it's crunchy, like an apple, but to each, their own!

3) The leaf colour in Autumn / Fall. Being a deciduous fruit tree, the leaves turn a stunning red'ish - fanta orange colour when they're about to drop. This also leads me to the 4th positive reason/benefit of a persimmon tree.

4) The leaves that ultimately drop are like "gardener's gold" because, in nature, and in many forests that drop leaves all by themselves, this produces a layer of light mulch that breaks down over winter to put nutrients back into the soil. So imagine if you had an entire food/fruit forest that were all deciduous! The soil would be pretty amazing! Japanese Maples would be a perfect addition if you were going for something like that.

5) The fruit tastes amazing. I would describe persimmons in general to have flavour notes similar to honey, cinnamon, maybe a hint or note of a tropical apricot too, & the warming spice note/flavour of allspice. It reminds me of Christmas, because the spice notes to the persimmon add a really warm and inviting flavour to the fruit.

For all those reasons, I love the Fuyu persimmon. Ours aren't big enough yet to produce the fruit, but that's ok. Good things take time, and in the meantime, I'll be taking off any fruits so that it can put all of its energy into growth, so it can get to a nice sized tree to be able to produce AND HOLD any fruit it produces.
