The soapnut plant, also known as the soapberry plant or Indian soapberry, is a tree species that is native to India and other parts of Asia. The scientific name of the plant is Sapindus mukorossi. The tree produces fruits, known as soapnuts or soapberries, that are rich in saponins, which have natural cleansing properties.
Soapnuts have been used for centuries in India and other parts of Asia as a natural alternative to soap and detergent. They can be used to clean clothes, dishes, and even as a shampoo for hair. Soapnuts are also used in traditional medicine for various ailments such as skin infections, hair loss, and inflammation.
In addition to their cleansing properties, soapnuts are environmentally friendly, as they are biodegradable and non-toxic. They are also becoming increasingly popular as an eco-friendly alternative to traditional laundry detergents and cleaning products.
Soapberry trees require full sunlight and thrive in well-drained soils, including acidic, alkaline, and sandy types. They grow best in temperatures between 5°C and 28°C and are drought-tolerant. Soapnut trees are hardier and can withstand frosts and light freezes once established. These trees can easily be grown outdoors in the warmer parts of New Zealand, in a sunny, warm, sheltered spot or a microclimate zone.
Current stock: 2-year-old, hardy outdoor-grown plants, over a meter tall. Some older leaves have minor damage.
