Starfruit, Carambola plant

Starfruit (Averrhoa carambola) is a tropical tree featuring gracefully drooping branches adorned with glossy, medium-green leaves arranged in a distinctive spiral formation. The distinctive star-shaped fruits display 5-6 prominent ridges and measure 5-7 inches in length. As they mature, the fruits transition from green to a vibrant yellow, revealing juicy, sweet flesh with a pleasantly tart undertone. Versatile in the kitchen, starfruit is enjoyed fresh, blended into refreshing juices, tossed into salads, or incorporated into desserts. Beyond culinary uses, the leaves have been valued in traditional medicine for their potential health benefits.

Starfruit trees thrive in warm, humid climates. They require well-draining soil, and prefer a soil that is rich in organic matter. While they prefer full sun when mature, they benefit from part shade while young. Starfruit trees can be successfully grown in warmer regions such as Northland, Auckland and the Bay of Plenty. Other parts of the country would require growing it in a greenhouse. Frost protection is necessary during winter months. If potted, starfruit trees can be brought indoors during colder periods.
