Sweet Tamarind ( Tamarindus indica )

The Sweet Tamarind is a striking, slow-growing evergreen that combines ornamental beauty with culinary appeal. Originating from tropical Northern Africa and naturalized across India and the Americas, this highly adaptable tree flourishes in deep, well-drained, slightly acidic soil and demonstrates impressive heat and drought tolerance. Fruit is a 4-8" long pod with several large seeds surrounded by sticky, paste-like flesh with a tasty sweet/sour flavor.  Though it survives temperatures down to -1 degree, it performs best when grown in a pot within a greenhouse or moved indoors during winter months in non-tropical climates, ensuring optimal growth and productivity year-round.
