Dragonfruit Yellow (Palora) is a popular cactus from the Selenicereus family, known for its vibrant yellow skinned fruit that boast an amazing flavor and sweetness. The inner flesh is white, slightly transparent, and crunchy due to its larger seeds, and very refreshing to eat. This type also has a brix score of 20-22, making it much sweeter than red and white dragonfruit.
The plant produces segments up to four feet long, with medium-sized spines along three edges and a robust olive to dark green vine. This self-fertile variety does not require cross-pollination for fruit production. The large, stunning flowers open and night and close again in the morning, when then turn into the fruit, which take around 6 months to form and ripen. Palora fruit in NZ are ready in spring, when other dragonfruit colours/types are out of season, giving a longer harvest season for the fruit.
This variety thrives in warmer areas of New Zealand or in greenhouses, withstanding temperatures down to 0°C. When grown outdoors, a winter copper spray can help prevent rust.
Correct stock : Cutting from mature fruiting plants; under the right conditions, it will produce fruit after 1–2 years.
Dragonfruit can be grown in ground, but also grow really well in pots and containers, and are easy to care for.
